Türkiye is one of the region’s reference countries in the field of thoracic surgery, with hospitals equipped with advanced technology and experienced surgeons. Effective diagnosis and successful surgical treatment are provided for diseases such as lung cancer, chest wall deformities, pleurisy, and mediastinal masses.
Minimally invasive methods such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robotic surgery are widely used in centers in Türkiye, providing patients with less pain, a lower risk of complications, and faster discharge.
Thoracic surgery teams work in coordination with oncology, pulmonology, radiology, and anesthesia departments to prepare patient-specific multidisciplinary treatment plans. This integrated structure is especially vital in lung cancer surgery.
Health tourism services developed for international patients offer opportunities for early diagnosis, rapid intervention, and comprehensive follow-up in the field of thoracic surgery. The entire process is managed professionally together with accommodation, translation, and transportation support.
The Scope and Challenges of Thoracic Surgery
Thoracic surgery involves not only the moment of surgery but also a long journey extending from diagnosis to the follow-up process. Lung masses, pleural diseases, trauma, or certain congenital chest structure problems fall within the scope of this field. For patients, this process usually begins with uncertainty and anxiety. Therefore, in thoracic surgery, the physician’s ability to explain the process and communicate with the patient is as important as technical skill.
Behind the strong reputation of this specialty in Türkiye lies the frequent encounter with difficult and diverse cases and the management of these cases within a multicenter structure. This naturally increases the clinical experience of surgeons.
The Structure of Medical Education and the Specialization Process
Medical education in Türkiye is a long and intensive process. Following medical school education, physicians accepted into thoracic surgery specialization receive comprehensive theoretical and practical training during a residency period lasting several years. Emergency cases, oncological surgeries, and multidisciplinary patient management hold an important place in this process.
During specialization training, surgeon candidates learn not only surgical techniques but also how to work together with fields such as radiology, pathology, pulmonology, and oncology. This holistic approach allows more balanced and individualized assessments to be made for the patient.
The Contribution of Case Diversity to Experience
The number and diversity of cases encountered by a surgeon are among the determining factors in professional development. Türkiye has a broad patient profile due to its population structure and the widespread accessibility of healthcare services. This enables physicians working in thoracic surgery to encounter different age groups and varying clinical presentations.
Education and research hospitals and university hospitals, especially in major cities, stand out as centers to which complex cases are referred. For patients, this means an increased likelihood of being evaluated by experienced teams. However, since every patient’s condition is unique, it should not be forgotten that the treatment plan must always be shaped through individual assessment.
Technological Infrastructure and Modern Surgical Methods
The technologies used in thoracic surgery have developed significantly in recent years. Minimally invasive methods such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robotic surgery allow procedures to be performed through smaller incisions in suitable patients. The use of these technologies in many centers in Türkiye indicates the existence of infrastructure compatible with international standards.
For patients, these methods are generally associated with expectations of a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to daily life. However, it should be particularly emphasized that not every patient is suitable for these methods and that the decision is made based on the surgeon’s clinical assessment.
The Prevalence of the Multidisciplinary Approach
Thoracic surgery is not a specialty practiced independently. During the diagnosis and treatment process, pulmonologists, oncologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and anesthesia teams work together. In many hospitals in Türkiye, these teams meet regularly through councils, making decision-making processes more balanced.
For the patient, this approach means not relying on a single opinion and planning with contributions from different specialties. Especially in suspicious masses or complex conditions, such joint evaluations help the process proceed in a more understandable and reassuring manner.
International Patient Experience and Feedback
The experiences of patients coming from abroad have also contributed to Türkiye becoming recognized in the field of thoracic surgery. Patients from different countries have the opportunity to experience both the communication established with physicians and the functioning of the healthcare system. Over time, this feedback creates awareness in the international arena.
However, each patient’s expectations, health condition, and response to the process are different. Therefore, positive experiences cannot be generalized; each application should be evaluated within its own circumstances.
Hospital Organization and Accessibility
The fact that public and private hospitals in Türkiye have certain standards in the field of thoracic surgery enables patients to access different options. Intensive care facilities, advanced imaging methods, and postoperative follow-up systems are widespread in major centers. This structure is particularly important for safe monitoring after major surgeries.
For patients, access to the hospital, appointment processes, and information stages are also part of the experience. Improvements made in these areas in recent years have contributed to making healthcare services more understandable.

Prof. Dr. Alper Fındıkcıoğlu graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine and completed his thoracic surgery residency at Dr. Siyami Ersek Hospital. He began his academic career at Başkent University in 2005; he received the title of associate professor in 2014 and professor in 2022. He has extensive experience in lung cancer, chest wall diseases, and minimally invasive surgery. Since 2024, he has been continuing his professional work at Acıbadem Hospital.
